"Oman Through American Eyes" Photo Exhibit

In 2005 and 2006, Edward Grazda, a highly-accomplished documentary photographer, spent some time in Oman — under the sponsorship of The Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman and the Institute for American Values — preparing a large-scale photo portrait of contemporary Omani society.

Mr. Grazda's Omani exhibition opened in Oman in November 2006. The project is a part of an intellectual and cultural exchange program involving the Institute and the Sultanate, and helps to fulfill the Institute's mission to engage the Muslim world in the arena of ideas and civil society.

On February 11, 2006, the U.S. Embassy of Oman, The Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman, and the Institute for American Values sponsored an exhibition of Mr. Grazda's previous work on the presence of Islam in America. Between 1994-2001 Mr. Grazda focused his lens on the mosques of New York City, both large and small. The photographs examine how Muslims practice their faith in the pluralistic culture of urban America. The exhibition, which took place at the Omani Society of Fine Art, is a selection of Mr. Grazda's images, which can be found in the book, New York Masjid: The Mosques of New York.
